Mile High City
This past weekend was not its usual brutal for the homeless living on the streets of Denver. A cold front that came through made things a nightmare for the homeless. Before the weekend, a homeless migrant was stabbed to death on Thanksgiving morning. In a 25-hour period the weekend after, four homeless were found dead of suspected overdoses on the street.
The cold makes things worse for people suffering from addiction, as they are trying to avoid the cold and may overuse in order to keep warm.
This year seems to be deadlier than ever for people experiencing homelessness in Denver. Drug overdoses have claimed the lives of 170 people living on the street so far this year with no end in sight. It’s the highest number of homeless overdoses the city has ever seen, double from just a few years ago.
This past weekend, 4 people died from drug overdoses on Denver streets in less than 25 hours. Denver has already surpassed the number of overdoses in the entirety of last year. That's already more than double the number of overdoses in 2019.
