A homeless encampment near East 50th Avenue and Dahlia Street was set to be cleared on Tuesday because of public health concerns. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston decided against it after visiting the site a few days before. His visit was prompted by a call from Councilwoman Shontel Lewis to visit the camp. She wanted the Mayor to see for himself there were no concerns for safety or public health.
“He had the opportunity to visit the encampment and get a chance to know the residents and also see how well they had taken care of that encampment and what the needs were for the encampment and it wasn’t for them to be swept,” she said. The city ended up providing services at the encampment.
