Armed security guards now patrol the former encampment known as “The Pit” that sat under steel bridges in Portland’s Old Town. The Portland Bureau of Transportation says the security is only there to protect the material and equipment of a contractor doing work in the area. If security comes in contact with anyone trying to trespass, their orders are to contact the city to have them removed. 19 people from the encampment were already placed in a sanctioned campsite.
