As expected, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved $500,000 in funding to go towards a diversion program that will keep people at risk of being homeless off the streets. The city will add $50,000, along with a group of non-profits contributing a total of $675,000.
Board Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer said that diversion programs have proven results with data showing they have kept almost 2,000 people in San Diego from becoming homeless. “It can cost more than $10,000 to provide a shelter bed to someone for 169 days. We can help six times more people through diversion than we can through the traditional approaches we’ve been following,” Lawson-Remer said.
